Good to know
What is BMI?
Body Mass Index is a number calculated from your weight and height that estimates whether you are in a healthy weight range. It is a quick screening tool, not a diagnosis.
Asia-Pacific vs WHO, which should I use?
Asia-Pacific cut-offs are lower because Asian populations tend to face weight-related health risks at a lower BMI. If you are of East, South, or Southeast Asian descent, Asia-Pacific is usually the better fit. WHO cut-offs are the global standard.
What is a healthy BMI range?
On Asia-Pacific cut-offs, 18.5 to 22.9 is considered healthy. On WHO cut-offs, 18.5 to 24.9 is healthy.
Is BMI accurate for athletes?
Not always. BMI cannot tell muscle from fat, so very muscular people can read as overweight. Use it as a rough guide, not a verdict.
How is BMI calculated?
BMI is your weight in kilograms divided by your height in metres squared (kg/m2).
